Bream the prime target on Gold Coast

The weather has been better than expected on the Gold Coast this week with nice sunny days, lighter winds and some fresh mornings as we continue to transition in the cooler months. Let’s have a look at how our customers went this week.

For our Houseboat customers and local fishos, Bream will be a prime target as the weather cools down. So far good numbers of large fish have been on the chew during April and May which is good news as we head into the winter Bream season. Most dedicated Bream anglers will tend to fish at night time when the larger fish and more actively feeding, you can still catch good sized fish during the day but you will have to pick your way through plenty of smaller ones. Fishing around structure is preferred like snags such as fallen trees, rock walls, Seaway pipeline and bridge pylons is the sort of territory that will attract bait fish and schools of hungry Bream. I recommend using a burly trail to attract the Bream and keep them around the area you’re fishing. I like to use either Wilson or stimulate pellets as they are easy to throw up current and won’t over feed the fish.  For a basic rig use a long 8lb fluorocarbon leader, either a 3 or 4 ball sinker in deeper water or go to a smaller sinker in shallow water or as the tide starts to slow down and a size 6 to 4 bait keeper  hook. Best baits are Mullet Gut or Mullet Fillet as it stays on the hook even when little pickers are having a chew.

With great conditions on the way this weekend heading out to the reefs for a bottom fishing session will be worth a go, the 50 fathom line should produce some nice AJ’S, Pearlies, Kingfish, Snapper and mixed species.  The 36, 24 and 18 fathom reefs will also produce a mixed bag of Snapper, Mauri Cod, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Kingfish, Jew Fish, Cobia and the odd Pearl Perch mainly on the 36’s.  Float lining WA Pilchards, Large Squid or live Bait’s usually does the trick.

With the water and air temps starting to cool down, customers have been catching a few nice Flathead the past couple of weeks, the odd bigger fish has been caught but larger numbers of fish between 40cm to 55cm range have been hitting Zmas 3” Minnows, StreakZ 4” curl tails, TT Lures Swith Blades, Zerek Fish Traps and Storm SX Soft vibes worked around creek mouths in the Coomera River, Pimpama River and Logan River. It’s worth having a look in the river mouths where they meet the main channels. Try working your lures around sandbanks and drop offs around Jumpinpin and the Broadwater until you locate better numbers of school size fish.  If you prefer to use bait try drifting White Pilchards, WA Pilcahrds, strips of Mullet Fillet or Yabbies.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks like we will see a great weekend on the way. Saturday should see light SW to SE winds before tending more N/NE direction on Sunday and remaining light. Early next week is also looking good for heading out for a fish. Just make sure you have the latest weather report before you head out on the water.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
