Bundaberg – weekly report

BUNDABERG OFFSHORE

What can I say… the school mackerel have been on the chew, succumbing to the small Samaki metal slugs and the faithful Flasha lures. Don’t forget to throw an unweighted pillie out the back – you might get lucky and land a big spanish mackerel that could be lurking around at the moment. At this stage, the weekend weather is not looking good but there might be a window on Sunday afternoon, and hopefully Australia Day will have some good weather for us all to get out and enjoy this great land. If you are heading out, make sure to check the latest weather conditions.

Gordon Irving with a mangrove jack caught in the Burnett River.

BURNETT RIVER TO ELLIOTT RIVER

The salt has started pushing back up the town reach, which has river fish fighting for your lure or bait. All reports have said there are quality flathead and bream being caught throughout the river, but the standout fish has been grunter bream around the port, with some monsters being landed on bait and soft plastics in 3” size. The best place to fish over the weekend will be the sheltered areas away from the swell that will be pushing up the mouth of the rivers. For example, the Elliott River has plenty of little creeks to push up with the tide to chase mangrove jack, which have been falling victim to Daiwa Bait Junkie Minnows rigged with a TT Lures Snake EyeZ Weedless, so you’re not getting snagged.

THE KOLAN RIVER AND BAFFLE CREEK

The Baffle and Kolan rivers have cleared up, with good reports of mud crabs on the move and all your summer favourites – from whiting to jack and queenfish. I use the Z-Man Slim Swimz in 3” size for flathead and working MMD Splash Prawn over the shallow flats for a feed of whiting.

Kevin Charteris with a beaut barramundi taken at Lake Monduran.

LAKE MONDURAN

The monster barramundi bite has slowed down a little now they aren’t all congregating in the main basin, but with the full moon earlier this week they should be getting hungry, and the Molix Shad will have them hitting the deck in no time. I can confirm there have been many 70cm models being landed on the trusty Jackall Squirrel.

Every failed cast is one cast closer to the perfect cast.

That’s all folks. Stay safe on the water and be mindful of your fellow fishers.
