Gold Coast estuaries producing the goods

The weather on the Gold Coast has started to transition into a bit more of an autumn pattern  this week, seeing cooler starts to the day followed by milder temps, which is a great sign for fishing. Let’s see what has been happening throughout the Gold Coast estuaries this week.

With the weather starting to cool down a bit at night, I thought it would be good to have a look in the Coomera River to see how active the Bull Sharks are. My kids had a student free day on Tuesday so we headed out for a look. We were using Mullet Fillet and Eel baits rigged on 90 lb wire and a mixture of 7/0 and 8/0 circle and J hooks. We kept a steady cube berley trail going and it wasn’t too long before we scored our first bite. Unfortunately the shark dropped the bait after a small run with no hook up but plenty of teeth marks in the bait to indicate a shark. Next run and Bec hooked and landed a nice 95cm Bull Shark, which was great fun on 8kg line. Jess also hooked up but it ended up being a good-sized GT, which fight hard once they get into the mid-50cm size range. We had another bite but the bait was dropped again. I think there were a few more smaller sharks playing with the bait than we normally find. Still a great few hours spent on the water.

Will spent the weekend out on one our houseboats and did quite well, scoring some nice Flathead working Zerek Fish Trap vibes in some of the deeper holes in the Coomera River and Tiger Mullet Channel. As the water cools down Flathead will become more active and gradually start to move out of the rivers and school up around Jumpinpim and the lower Broadwater. Try looking in the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Logan River then work your way out to the river mouths. Tiger Mullet Channel, Whalleys Gutter, Canaipa Passage, Cabage Tree Point and Jacobs Well should all produce Flathead. Trolling Hards body lures, throwing Plastics, working metal vibes and soft vibes are all great option if you like lures. Drifting baits is also a great way to locate Flathead, try using Prawns, White Pilchards, WA Pilchards and Yabbies will do the trick.

Dan from Bush ‘n Beach also spent a few days on the Colleen Ann with his parents and fiance and they had a great time catching a wide variety of fish throughout various stretches of our Gold Coast estuaries. The attached pics are from their trip.

It’s worth having a look around Jumpinpin Bar area on the incoming tide. I have noticed quite a bit of bird activity this week as far in as Whalleys gutter. Schools of Tailor have been active with the birds cleaning up the scraps of fish. Try throwing small metal slugs into the action for a hook up.

Some nice Bream have been caught in good numbers during late April, as we head towards winter it looks like a great season on the way for the Bream fisherman around Jumpinpin area and also the Gold Coast Seaway. Some good spots to try around the Pin are the Huts along Short Island, Tiger Mullet Channel, Crusoe Island, Rock Bars near the Power Lines and the Logan River.  Down the southern end of the Broadwater try the Gold Coast Seaway Walls, Wave Break Island, Lands End, Marine Parade Labrador is a great land based spot to fish.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks like we will see stronger Southerly winds on Friday and Saturday before tending S/SE and easing to moderate on Sunday. We have plenty of options to find a spot out of the wind and catch a feed over the weekend on the Gold Coast.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
