Gold Coast offshore reefs fishing well

pIt’s been a nice week on Gold Coast with all our Houseboat hirers enjoying ANZAC day on the Broadwater. With the Labour Day Long Weekend in sight let’s have a look at some fishing options on the Gold Coast.

Prawns have been around in big numbers for the past week leading up to the new moon with many anglers getting their 10 litre bucket limit in just a few casts. Just make sure you are up to date with the latest rules and information in regards to the white spot control area.

Top pocket nets are the best option and easiest to remove the prawns you catch. Some spots to try are Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, The Power Lines, Logan River, Russel and Macleay have all been prawning well. Keep an eye out for concentrations of boats casting on the prawns if you have limited experience this is the best way for you to get among the action. It can get a bit hectic so just be patient and considerate of you fellow boaties.

Houseboat customers have been catching a few nice Tailor in the Jumpinpin area this week, the water quality is getting better and bait schools are starting to thicken up. Work the area from the Pin bar mouth west towards Short Island and the entrance to Tiger Mullet Channel, keep an eye out for birds working the feeding Tailor school or any top water action. As the water cools they will move up into the estuaries to horas the bait. We picked up a 37cm Tailor in the Coomera over the weekend. Try casting metal slugs, surface poppers or trolling shallow diving lures. If your prefer bait whole WA pilchards or strips of mullet fillet are great.

We’ve seen our Gold Coast offshore reefs fishing well the past few days, you just have to watch the tide and pressure wave build up on the run out tide thanks to the new moon and bit of swell offshore. We will cop a bit of swell and wind over the weekend but by early next week it will be worth a go. Customers did well last weekend and midweek catching some nice Snapper, Moses, Trag Jew, Pearl Perch, Tuskies and few Jew. Local angler Jerremy scored a monster Snapper (see photo) Most reefs have been fishing well from 18, 24, 36 and 50 fathom depths. As the seasons change the bottom fishing will just get better.

There has been plenty of Bream and Whiting on offer throughout the Broadwater and Jumpinpin area with our Houseboat customers and locals scoring a feed on Yabbies and worms.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast

At the time of writing my report we will see the Southerly winds pick up by Friday night before easing back to moderate by Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Monday and Tuesday are looking great at this stage with light winds from the E/NE.  Just remember to check the latest forecast before heading out.

Just remember the waterways and local boat ramps will be ultra-busy during the public holiday so bring your patience and manners and have a safe holiday.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
