Productive areas for flathead and bream on Gold Coast

5 year old Ava Beutel caught this awesome Flathead on a Houseboat Holiday.

Hi Everyone, we’ve been lucky enough to have another nice week here on the Gold Coast for all our Houseboat crews enjoying time on the water during School Holidays. The Fishing has been good the past week with reports of some great catches coming in. Let’s see what’s been biting this week.

Customers have reported some good catches of Bream being landed from the Pin, some productive spots are Tiger Mullet Channel, Whalleys Gutter, McKenzies Channel, Crusoe Island, Kalinga Bank and Short Island. The Broadwater has been fishing well around the oyster leases in the Aldershots, Paradise Point, Lands End, Marine Parade Rock Wall and the Southport Seaway. The weekend will see plenty of keen anglers anchoring up for a night time session with most people fishing all night long braving the cooler conditions to try to land the bigger night time Bream. A basic running sinker rig will work well, I recommend a bait holder style hook around size 4 attached to an 8lb Fluro Carbon leader and depending on tide between a 2–4 ball sinkers. Burly is a must when chasing Bream, pellets are easy to use and we stock both Stimulate and Wilson Fishing brads which work well to attract fish and keep them feeding in the area you’re fishing. Best baits are Mullet Fillet, Prawns, White Pilchards, Blue Bait and Yabbies.

The Beutal family had a great time on board their Coomera Houseboat Holiday finding a good mixed bag of fish and crabs from around Jumpinpin. Young Ava landed a quality Flathead (see photo in report) fishing around Jumpinpin, the family also scored a nice feed of Bream and a couple of good winter Mud Crabs putting together a nice feed.

I spent some time over on South Stradbroke Island on Sunday having a look around with family and friends. Beach fishing is a great option when the westerly winds are blowing as the beaches are protected out of the cool wind. It was great to see lots of family’s enjoying surf fishing and catching some nice Tailor, Whiting, Flathead, Bream, Tarwine and Dart in many of the beach gutters dotted along the Island. My kids had fun collecting fresh pipis which are great bait, then using the pipis to catch some live Beach Worms which were in good numbers and are irresistible to Whiting, Bream, Tarwine and Dart in the surf. Chasing Tailor is great fun, daytime fishing can be just as good at night if you can find a good gutter holding fish. Keep an eye out for birds feeding on bait fish and have a metal slug ready to throw at any action you see should result in a bite. For the bait fishos use whole WA pilchards ringed a 3 x gang of eitherh 3/0 or 4/0 hooks and a large enough sinker to stop your bait washing up on shore. Using bait over a metal lure will give you a shot at more species including Bream, Flathead and Jew Fish. We have a great range of beach fishing gear in stock at Coomera Bait & Tackle.

Brad Smith Fishing Charters have reported upstream in both the Nerang and Tweed Rivers is fishing consistently producing quality Flathead for their customers. Metal blade vibe lures have accounted for plenty of fish and also Yabbies and White Pilchards are doing the trick.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any great catches or photos you would like to share, please email us and let us know how you went.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks good as we head into the weekend, Friday and Saturday will see light to moderate SW winds. Sunday will see the wind direction shift to light W/NW direction with plenty of Sunshine on the way. The swell offshore seems to be hanging around a bit, I’d recommend to have a good look before heading offshore. Just make sure you have the latest weather report before you head out on the water.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
